  • Put the code where a seated guest can reach it without standing — a table tent, or a sticker at the edge rather than the centre of a six-seater.
  • Photograph your top twenty dishes first. A guest ordering from their own phone buys with their eyes, and items with photos are the items that move.
  • Write a description for anything a captain would normally explain. The QR menu is doing that job now.
  • Toggle availability the moment the kitchen calls it, not at the end of service.
  • Keep taking waiter orders too. QR ordering is a second lane, not a replacement for being served.

What to avoid

  • Treating it as a way to cut floor staff. The wait shrinks; the service still has to happen, and guests notice when it does not.
  • Leaving sold-out dishes live because toggling feels like an extra step. One stale item undermines trust in the whole menu.
  • A menu with no photos and no descriptions — the guest is now doing the browsing a waiter used to do for them, with nothing to browse.

Do guests need to download an app to use QR ordering?

No. Scanning the table QR opens your menu in the phone's normal browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create — only your staff use the DinePilot app.

Can guests still order through a waiter instead?

Yes. QR ordering is optional for every guest. Waiters can take and enter orders from the app exactly as before, and both kinds of order reach the kitchen the same way.

How do I mark a dish as sold out?

Toggle its availability once in the menu screen. The item immediately disappears from every guest's phone, so nobody can order what you cannot make.

Can guests add to an order after they have placed it?

Yes. From the same table QR a guest can add another round to the open order, so a second or third order does not need a waiter to come back.

Does QR ordering work for large groups on one table?

It does. Several guests can scan the same table QR and add to one shared order, each with their own per-item notes, so a table of eight is still a single bill.

What if a guest cannot scan the QR code?

A waiter can always take the order in the app on the guest's behalf. QR ordering is there to speed up service, never to remove the option of being served.
